Plan your application

Optical interconnections

Choose patch cords by both equipment connectors, polish, fiber type and fiber count. Check length and routing inside the cabinet.

Ethernet over fiber

Compare converters with fixed optical interfaces or SFP ports. For SFP equipment, confirm the module, speed and converter compatibility separately.

Termination and maintenance

Choose tools by task and supported cable or fiber range. Plan cleaning, inspection and measurement; a visual check does not measure link loss.

How to choose

CheckBefore ordering
SC or LCIdentify the port at each end. A cable may have different end connectors when each matches its respective interface.
APC or UPCConfirm polish at every connection. Do not directly mate an APC endface with a UPC endface; color is a reference, not a substitute for documentation.
OS2 or OM3Choose singlemode or multimode fiber according to the transceivers and link design. Do not choose solely by distance or cable color.
Simplex or duplexCheck whether the link uses one or two fibers. For BiDi, confirm complementary wavelengths; for duplex, check transmit and receive polarity.
Equipment and optical budgetVerify speed, wavelength, receiver sensitivity and transmitter power. Account for fiber, connector and splice losses before approving link length.

Common selection questions

Can I join SC/APC to SC/UPC using an adapter?

APC and UPC endfaces must not be directly mated. Choose the correct polish for each port and adapter; a hybrid cable can have different ends that match their respective interfaces.

Is an LC patch cord always multimode?

No. LC identifies the connector, not the fiber type. Check OS2 or OM3 and polish in the cable datasheet.

Does an SFP media converter include the optical module?

Do not assume it does. Check the SKU contents and select a module compatible with the speed, interface and link requirements.

Will two identical BiDi converters form a link?

Not necessarily. The ends require complementary transmit and receive wavelengths and matching speed and fiber type.
